A Photosynth Experiment

Years ago, I blogged about emerging technology for deep zooming called Seadragon. This was inspired by a TED Talk, in which Blaise Agüera y Arcas demostrated the capabilities of Seadragon alongside Photosynth, software that assembles photos into 3D environments. Before my recent trip to China, I never had enough photographs of a single object for creating a synth.

One of the most photographed landmarks in Guangzhou, is the Five Rams Statue. Situated in Yuexiu Park, it commemorates the legend of how five immortals riding five rams brought grain to the then barren city. After giving their blessings and saving the people from famine, the rams turned into stone. I took over 45 photographs of the statue from a variety of angles. Afterwards, I used Photosynth to stitch them together into a 3D Synth. Checkout the result below.
